Overview
This design-build trainset maintenance facility project includes 110,000 sqft of new facility construction and major modifications to the existing 323,000 sqft facility within Amtrak’s Ivy City Yard to allow Amtrak to inspect, test, and perform maintenance on fully assembled trainsets, including the next generation Airo and Acela trainsets. All work is performed around ongoing Amtrak facility operations. The project is comprised of four phases. Phase 1 includes a new detached three track Service and Cleaning facility covered by a canopy for weather protection. Phase 2 sees the central portion of existing facility demolished and rebuilt to house a heavy trainset Maintenance and Inspection (M&I) track and a Service and Cleaning track each with pit access running through the building. The building has a raised roof to house a three-ton monorail crane, diesel exhaust ventilation, and other industrial equipment. Phase 3 includes a new 50,000 sqft drop table building with a 30-ton bridge crane, 100 ton drop table, a M&I track with inspection pits, loading docks, and two covered fueling pads constructed at the north and south end of the new M&I facility. Phase 4 includes improvements to the existing High Speed Rail (HSR) Acela shop including new fueling pads, industrial equipment, and diesel exhaust ventilation. Ladder tracks and overhead catenary will be removed and shifted within the yard to accommodate the new facilities. Additional scope includes a 12-inch watermain installed through the Ivy City Yard and the adjacent Coach Yard along with site grading/civil work, retaining walls, roadway access, utilities, sidewalks, storm drainage, and sitework.
